Former undergraduate researchers
Ian is an undergraduate student in the Fisheries and Wildlife major. He joined the lab in April 2012, and was awarded a UCARE grant to study fluctuating asymmetry in painted turtles in western Nebraska, near Cedar Point Biological Station. Ian was awarded a second UCARE award in April 2013 to work on vocalizations of prairie-chickens in collaboration with Cara Whalen (MS student). Ian completed an Honors Thesis on his turtle project, and graduated in May 2014 from UNL with "Highest Distinction"
Josiah joined the lab during 2010-2011, and was awarded a UCARE grant to study nesting behavior of prairie-chickens in the Nebraska Sandhills. He used solar-powered video cameras and temperature data loggers to understand predators and nest absence rates, and his poster won first place at the UNL Life Sciences poster competition in 2012.
Carla was an undergraduate student in the School of Natural Resources. She was a double major in Fisheries and Wildlife and Environmental Studies, and was the recipient of a UNL UCARE award for undergraduate research. She conducted her thesis research on stable isotopes in hawk feathers, and she joined the lab in Spring 2010.
Adam was a Fisheries and Wildlife undergraduate student. He received a UCARE grant in 2008 to work on radio-marked prairie-chicken chicks (left). His project was a part of Ty Matthews' graduate project, and Adam investigated causes of mortality after hatching. Adam graduated in May 2010 and works for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
Ken was an undergraduate student majoring in Biochemistry and Mathematics at UNL; he participated in the Research for Undergraduates in Theoretical Ecology program in 2006. Ken and his team studied a painted turtle population in western Nebraska, near Cedar Point Biological Station. Ken return in 2007 to help me study the turtles, and he conducted stress hormone research for his UNL Honors Thesis at the turtle pond during the summer of 2008. He graduated in 2009.
Branden was an undergraduate student majoring in Fisheries and Wildlife. He worked with January on the Niobrara River Valley project, and he sampled small mammals and birds during 2005. Branden received a UCARE grant for 2005, for undergraduate research. He conducted an analysis of return rates from birds banded on the Niobrara Valley Preserve. Brandon graduated in May 2007.
Scott was a Fisheries and Wildlife major. He worked at the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory, where he assessed our new solar powered video monitoring system for grassland bird nests. Scott received a UCARE grant for 2006, for undergraduate research. He graduated from UNL in 2006. Scott went on to become a MS student at UNL with Dr. Scott Hygnstrom.
Kent was a Fisheries and Wildlife major, and he worked with Silka on a small mammal component of the Sandhills avian ecology project. Kent is a UNL Honors student, and he received a UCARE grant for 2004, for undergraduate research. His research poster received best student poster at the Nebraska Chapter of the Wildlife Society meeting in 2004. Kent graduated in May 2006. He went on to complete a MS at Stephen Austin State University in Texas, and recently began a PhD program at UNL.
Zach was a Fisheries and Wildlife major at UNL. He worked with Max on the avian portion of the Rainwater Basin project. Zach received a UCARE grant for 2003 and 2004, for undergraduate research. His project assessed the effect of woody vegetation in wetlands on cowbird parasitism levels. He graduated in December 2005. He went on to complete a MS degree in my lab with Dr. Mark Vrtiska as a co-advisor.
Kelsi was a Fisheries and Wildlife major. She worked with Tina on the Rainwater Basin mammal project. Kelsi received a UCARE grant for 2003 for undergraduate research. Her project determined the abundance of various mesopredators in 11 Rainwater Basin wetlands. She graduated in 2004. Kelsi works for NGPC and Pheasants Forever as a regional habitat specialist
