Current "Powell lab" members
Danielle is a MS student co-advised with John Carroll. She is working on a long-term data analysis from lek counts of greater prairie-chickens in Nebraska dating back to the 1950s to assess drivers of population change. Danielle did her BS at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and she joined my lab in August 2018.
Joey is a MS student, co-advised with Dr. Adam Behney with Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Joey's research is on over-winter survival and habitat use in northern bobwhite in northeastern Colorado. Joey did his BS at Southern Illinois University and started his graduate program at UNL in August 2019.
Dominic is a MS student in the NRT program at UNL. He is co-advised with Dr. Liz VanWormer and is interested in the interactions between wildlife management, habitat management, and public health in the context of resilience. He spends a lot of time thinking about ticks. Dominic did his BS at Kent State, and he joined the lab in August 2019.
Israt is a visiting PhD student, and she studies in George Gale's lab at KMUTT in Bangkok, Thailand. Originally from Bangladesh, Israt joined the lab in January 2020. Her research is on avian communities in flood-maintained grasslands on islands in Bangladesh.
Erika is an undergraduate research student, and the recipient of a UCARE award from UNL. She is a Fisheries and Wildlife major, and her undergraduate Honors thesis explores the bias caused by clumps of animals at waterholes in transect surveys of game in Namibia. She joined the lab in summer 2019.
A "Powell lab" is really difficult to define, given the level of co-advising that I use and the international collaborations in which I participate. But, I define it as the folks for whom I serve as adviser or co-adviser, or for whom I have a steadfast, vested interest in their success! You can click on the photos above to learn more about the current lab members, or click here to see former lab members.
I have typically carried 3-5 graduate students, 1-2 undergraduates, and a postdoc at any given time. My lab is currently smaller than it has been in recent years, as I started a half-time position as Associate Dean in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources in January 2020.
My graduate students are usually supported by external research grants, which pay their stipends and support the research expenses for their projects. I advertise open positions on a variety of web sites, including here and the Texas A&M Job Board.
