NRES 492: Wildlife Conservation in Namibia

We plan to return to Namibia in 2024! Please email if you are interested in a future trip.

As a global student experience through the University of Nebraska, we are proactive in our trip planning with UNL's Global Experiences office.

Check out our trip's official information and application page

We encourage you to visit this site to view the US State Department travel recommendations for Namibia.

APPLICATION SCHEDULE:

We typically have applications due in November (the fall before our summer trip) with notification in December to allow for the pre-trip sessions during spring semester.

Our trip has a focus on wildlife conservation in the wonderful country of Namibia in southern Africa. It is a safe country with a lot of wildlife and amazing landscapes and experiences for you! We will explore multiple models of conservation from private farms that do ecotourism to support conservation to NGOs like AfriCat and Cheetah Conservation Fund to National Parks and private nature reserves. We also visit communal conservancy areas to see how indigenous Namibians live and depend on wildlife resources. You won't find a better way to see all of this variety.

Experience something bigger than you...!

The UNL Namibia trip was started by Mark Pegg in 2005, so we have a long history of successful trips! This year, your co-leaders will be Larkin and Kelly Powell. We lived in Namibia during 2009 during a Fulbright Scholar experience, and Larkin taught at the Polytechnic of Namibia in the Nature Conservation Department. Kelly volunteered with orphanages and a preschool. Our experience in Namibia includes research on ecotourism and wildlife. This will be the seventh Namibia trip that Larkin has led or co-led, and we co-led the 2017, 2019, and 2022 Namibia trips.

We bring our experience and a large slate of friends and colleagues in Namibia to this course, and we hope you find Namibia to be as special as we do!
